According to new research, polyethylenes are the most popular plastic in use today.
Polyethylene polystyrene (PEPS), which is commonly used in the world’s most popular products, is now the world leader in use, the researchers said.
The new study by the Australian National University’s (ANU) Department of Polymer Science and Engineering found that polyethylenimine (PEI), which has a higher melting point than polyethyleneglycol (PEG), was the most widely used plastic, with nearly one-third of all the materials used in modern devices using it.
“Polyethylene and PEI are both very well-known materials for the manufacture of the world-class electronics that we all use,” said the lead author, Andrew McAfee, a PhD student in the School of Polymers and Nanomaterials at ANU.
“However, they’re two very different materials.
They’re both made from a similar but very different combination of polymers and a different polymer molecule.
They both require very different temperatures and conditions for their molds to form, which means they’re both incredibly fragile and they don’t last very long.”
Our research shows that a good combination of temperature, pressure, and the right conditions can create some very high quality products.
“Professor McAfee said that the polyethylENE (PE), polyethylenoate (PEEO), polypropylene (PP), polyurea (PUR), and polyimide (PIM) plastics were all used in high-end electronics.”
They’re the materials that make up most of the electronics that you use in your phone, your laptop, your tablet, your TV, your cars, all the products that are powered by them,” he said.”
But we found that these materials can be extremely fragile.
They can shatter when handled and damaged.
They have low tensile strength and are susceptible to cracking and bending under extreme temperatures and pressures.
“We found that we needed a very strong, extremely durable, flexible polymer material to produce these high-quality products.”
According to the research, researchers found that the best polyethylenic polystyrol (PE) and polypropylene (PP) materials used were PEI and PEEO.
These are both polymers that are used in plastic bottles, caps, and lids.
“The new research shows we need to rethink our current approaches to materials and plastics,” said Professor McAfee.
“Our current materials and processes are just as brittle and fragile as the plastics they’re replacing.”
When we look at the materials we use, we’re using materials that are incredibly brittle and we’re also using materials where the melting point of a material is significantly higher than the melting temperature of a polymer.
We have to think about that.
“So, it’s going to be very important for us to think much more deeply about the materials and their properties and how they’re made.”
Professor McGlynn added that the research was published in the Journal of Materials Science and Technology.
“What we found was that the more we used polyethylenediamine polymers, the less polyethylens are in the end product,” Professor McGlynn said.
